Why Bellenden?
Before Bellenden moved to its current offices by London Bridge, the original office was based in Southwark’s Bellenden Road.
The road is steeped in history, but only in the last century that the area became known for both innovation and substance. Antony Gormley’s studio was located here and his unique road bollards are still doing their job to this day. Such workmanship is matched only by the intricate designs on shops like The Peckham Experiment, named after the famous health and social experiment of the 1930s. Desmond’s the barber shop, of 1980’s TV fame, still trades there and the Victoria Pub, previously “The Wishing Well,” was the setting for the Bob Hoskins and Michael Caine film, “Last Orders.”
Today it also boasts Ganapati’s Restaurant, voted one of the best eateries in South London and The Review Bookshop, where even the staff win recognition for the books they write. A plethora of artists and architects continue to create a hub of creativity and vibrancy in the heart of South London.
Successful delivery, through innovation and cooperation, are prominent traits in an area which embodies real community spirit. The area also embodies community spirit, innovation and co-operation. Indeed, the Bellenden Regeneration Scheme, which restored numerous homes and the main shopping parade, was regarded as one of the most successful regeneration schemes in the country.
The road also forms the central spine of the council ward, The Lane Ward, which I have represented for eight years and I’m proud to say—still do.
We outgrew Bellenden Road in 2006 and now have offices in the four capital cities of the United Kingdom. Bellenden’s name is a reminder that its ethos is rooted in one of the most diverse areas of Britain. It is an ethos that mixes cooperation, mutual respect, creativity and practical delivery—values reflected in the work we do as a company, everyday.
